Immunity to Change - What are your hidden competing commitments?
Have you wondered why some meticulously planned change initiatives fail to deliver on the promised outcomes? Why are some perfectly reasonable, new behaviors so difficult to instill in the workforce?
The Immunity to Change model is a psychological framework developed by Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey (Harvard professors). It focuses on how individuals or groups can be "immune" to change due to underlying beliefs, fears, or internal conflicts, often at an unconscious level.
The Immunity Map is a handy tool to help individuals and organizations surfaced “hidden” (i.e. unconscious) competing commitments. By identifying these hidden competing commitments, individuals and organizations can then take steps (e.g. via mini experiments to challenge underlying assumptions) to address them.
This tool effectively demonstrates how esoteric-sounding psychological constructs can be practically applied at-scale to enable change in individuals and organizations.
